Call for Papers: LASA Political Institutions (LAPIS) Section’s Sponsored Panels for the 2023 LASA Congress
Deadline to receive abstracts: Friday, 2 September 2022
Decision announced: Monday, 5 September 2022
LASA Political Institutions section is receiving paper proposals for two featured panels. Papers that are selected for these panels will be automatically accepted to the LASA 2023 conference and included in the conference program.
LASA 2023 is scheduled for 23-27 May 2023 and will be held in hybrid format, both virtually and physically in Vancouver, Canada.
Panel I: Comparative and historical perspectives on the Latin American states
This panel examines novel accounts on state formation and state building in Latin America. It brings together papers with a comparative and/or historical perspective that allows understanding variation in state characteristics between countries in the region or among subnational units of the same country. By adopting a historical/comparative perspective, abstracts submitted to this panel help understand the current challenges of state building, institution building, and democratic representation in the region.
Panel II: New perspectives on de-democratization in Latin America
This panel brings together papers on the process or the resistance to de-democratization in Latin America. Their focus can be at the national or subnational levels. Submissions that innovate at the theoretical or conceptual levels and help us think of these processes in a new light are particularly encouraged.
Submission information:
Proposals are due to Section chair Rodrigo Barrenechea by 2 September 2022 and authors will be notified on 5 September about the decision.
This will allow authors whose papers are not accepted for one of the section-sponsored panels the chance to submit their abstract directly to LASA by the 8 September general deadline for submissions.
If the abstract is accepted for one of the section-sponsored panels, the author(s) must become LASA member before September 7th, and section members for LASA 2023.
