«Guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in university contexts (version 5.0)»

Herein you will find a new version of my «Guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in university contexts (version 5.0)«, which provide basic guidance for university professors and students on how to use AI, particularly large language models (LLMs), in an informed, transparent, ethical and responsible manner.

As in previous versions, the guidelines lay out rules and principles for the use of AI for educational and academic purposes inside and outside the university classroom. This new version of the guidelines benefited from lessons learned from the implementation of previous versions of the instrument in my classes and workshops with students and professors.

In addition to the kind feedback I received from many people, the guidelines also benefited from the literature on AI and LLMs that was published in the first semester of 2023.

The guidelines are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, so if you are an educator interested in formulating your own policies or guidelines, you can download, share and adapt these guidelines as long as you make the appropriate attribution and indicate if you made changes.

In addition, if you need a short paragraph setting out the main rules for using AI to include in your syllabi, I recommend the following wording:

«In this course, the use of artificial intelligence systems is allowed as long as such use complies with four rules: (1) Informed use: that the student knows how the system works, its limitations and risks. (2) Transparent use: that the students report the used tool and how they used it. (3) Ethical use: that they do not pass off as their own the text generated by the system and that they apply citation rules (e.g., APA rules for ChatGPT). (4) Responsible use: that all information obtained through the system is checked against other reliable sources and that no personal or confidential information (their own or others’) is entered into the system when making queries. For more detailed guidance on these rules, see the ‘Guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in university contexts (version 5.0)‘.»
